Stans No Tubes ZTR Crest Rear MTB Wheel
NoTubes has thrust itself into position as major wheel brand in short time. Making their mark with ultra-lightweight, tubeless ready aluminum wheels, NoTubes has pushed all their chips in, redefining road, mountain, and cyclocross categories. The ZTR Crest series of wheels (27.5", 29") maintains the lightweight cross country them but adds significant strength and durability, along with updated Bead Socket Technology.
It is hard, if not impossible to beat this ZTR Crest Rear Wheel on the balance of quality and value. It's strength to low weight ratio makes it a staff favorite for general cross country riding and racing. The BST tire bead make seating tubeless compatible tires on the Crest 21mm internal width rim effortless. Stan's yellow rim tape is light and seals exceptionally well, and can be inexpensively replaced anytime. The Crest rim is shallow, only 15.8mm in depth, so the strength comes from the combination of the aluminum extrusion, BST and 24.2 external width. Despite it's inherent strength, this XC-purposed rim comes in 380 grams, keeping rotational weight exceptionally low.
The rest of the wheel has been conceived to match the XC rim. Spokes are black lightweight DT Swiss 14/17g thickness with silver alloy nipples. The hub is NoTubes 3.30D 6-bolt disc option. This modular hub can be adapted from QR to thru-axle systems, as well as Shimano/SRAM cassette style freehub to the SRAM XD driver. Sealed steel cartridge bearings roll smoothly and can be replaced, as can the freehub body. QR spec'ed wheels come with a quick release. Thru-axles are frame specific and delivered with your frame.
Ride wise, the ZTR Crest will spin up speed quickly with positive freehub engagement. The 3x lacing pattern is taut, for minimal spoke load under braking. The thin steel spokes and 3x lacing pattern offer compliance and comfort, taking the edge off bigger than intended hits, while preserving your rim and backside. The tubeless system works flawlessly with most Tubeless Ready tires. Some UST specific tires may be virtually impossible to mount, so do your research there. UST is a different standard. NoTubes has done a great job with the ZTR Crest. These wheels are perfect for XC racing or riding, and more than handle aggressive trail rides that don't feature drops and gaps. Ideal tire width would run 2.0" to 2.3", but it is not uncommon to see a set of 2.4's on Crests in Enduro events. These are very well thought out and executed wheels, and with the 29er rear coming in at 840 grams, you know they are light and fast as well.
