What is a base layer?
A base layer is the top you wear next to your skin and under everything else while cycling. It’s soft, absorbent and wicks away sweat.
Who needs a base layer?
Anyone cycling for any distance or length of time will really benefit from the extra comfort of a base layer.
What are the choices?
You can opt for a long sleeve base layer in winter or a short sleeve one in warmer weather. Most are made from fast-wicking polyester, but there are also some in warm, soft merino wool or anti-bacterial bamboo.
What should I buy with it?
A base layer is your first line of defence in a layered clothing system, so it’s best with a jersey as a mid-layer then a windproof or waterproof outer shell for full weather protection.
Base layers are simple and essential, but you can get some really technical options too. There are some with silver woven in to make them more resistant to odour and compression base layers which are said to help muscle recovery.
